Why is white worn at Wimbledon?

In short: tradition. Tennis used to be a sport for the elite and there were strict rules attached to appearance and ceremony. Although these have slowly disappeared in the sport, Wimbledon (as the oldest tournament) has for the most part kept these traditions alive.
