Why do we set off fireworks at New Year’s Eve?

In setting off fireworks, several traditions converge. The Germanic tradition of making noise at the turn of the year to drive away spirits and the Indonesian tradition of setting off fireworks at New Year’s Eve. The latter tradition was adopted by migrants in the 1950s by the Netherlands. Before that, fireworks were also set off, but mostly on other occasions.
