How big was the Roman empire?

The Roman Empire, then known as the Imperium Romanus ruled some 85 million people. In the south they reached as far as Egypt, and in the north they came as far as Scotland. In the east, they reached as far as where the Persian Gulf now lies – at the time, this area was still known as Mesapotamia.
